Report No. 1085: Safety Tests of Nike-Hercules Missile Sites, 1959-11

 Item
Identifier: 09.027

Overview

This report presents the results of two full-scale tests simulating an accidental warhead detonation within an underground storage magazine containing a normal compliment of six Nike-Hercules missiles equipped with T-45 warheads. The effects of the accident on the magazine, the underground personnel shelter adjacent to the storage room, and to eight conventional two-story houses (four of brick and four of frame construction) are evaluated. Peak pressures and positive impulses of the air blast at the distance of the houses and at several other distances are presented, as are ground shick measurements and accelerations of several of the houses. A probable sequence of events within the magazines is hypothesized, based on the blast measurements and observations of damage to the magazines. Although damage to the magazine was catastrophic, damage to the main structural members of the houses was minor.
